I mean, is ‘fat’ really the worst thing a human being can be? Is ‘fat’ worse than ‘vindictive’, ‘jealous’, ‘shallow’, ‘vain’, ‘boring’ or ‘cruel’? Not to me; but then, you might retort, what do I know about the pressure to be skinny? I’m not in the business of being judged on my looks, what with being a writer and earning my living by using my brain…
I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn’t seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’
‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed, ‘the last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’
What I felt like saying was, ‘I’ve produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren’t either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no – my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!
I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny – a thousand things, before ‘thin’. And frankly, I’d rather they didn’t give a gust of stinking chihuahua flatulence whether the woman standing next to them has fleshier knees than they do. Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons.

I just read this book this weekend and it was quite the read. Even though it was hard to get through I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite as emotionally powerful and moving. Through all of her tragedies, hardships, and truly horrific experiences, Tree Girl still managed to keep going and remain strong, and because of that she made a difference by lifting others up and giving them hope when all seemed lost. I feel amazed and truly empowered by her story.
My heart has been heavy lately. After dealing with a summer of complete ups and downs, I think that I am just emotionally drained. I’m realizing that I need to stop putting pressure on myself to make decisions that I really don’t have to be making at this point in my life, but no matter how much I try and convince myself of this, I can’t seem to get rid of this nagging, sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.

These were my thoughts from this summer…. I am so glad that things seem to be looking up and I feel somewhat like myself again. Life is good.
But what about the elephants?
This is my latest work of art :) I just happened to run across the elephant headline in one of the newspapers I was using and I had to use it… what a happy coincidence :)

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker sugar cookie mix
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon mint extract
- 6 to 8 drops green food color
- 1 egg
- 1 cup creme de menthe baking chips
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Directions:
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F. In large bowl, stir cookie mix, butter, extract, food color and egg until soft dough forms. Stir in creme de menthe baking chips and chocolate chunks.
- Using small cookie scoop or teaspoon, drop dough 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until set. Cool 3 minutes; remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Serve warm or cool completely. Store tightly covered at room temperature.
